![]() ![]() Ava Catherine Marcus was born and grew up in Melbourne, Australia. She is the oldest of two children with a brother - Archer (but also goes by Archie or Ace, as his dad called him from birth) - seven years younger than her, raised by their single father, Neil, when their mother passed away from cancer soon after Archer was born. Ava doesn't really remember her mother, but her father ensured her memory was alive with many pictures and videos of her, telling her frequently how alike her mom she was. He was both a father and a mother to them, somehow managing to help her grow up with all the typical female hurdles one goes through when they hit teens and beyond. Her poor dad faced it like a trooper, but when she was eighteen she caught a bad flu when Archer was away at school camp and her father was trying to get home from work to her so she didn't have to be alone. A storm hit, and rather than pulling over, he kept driving. His car spun out of control and he crashed into a tree, dying on impact. Ava felt like she wouldn't be able to life without him and was left to raise her younger brother, and to this day she doesn't know how she coped. Eventually, they went to live with their aunt and uncle in Canberra, but they were so different to her dad that it made her grief for him even worse. It was ultimately what led to her decision to enlist in the Royal Australian Air Force to train as a medic because it was that or step onto a path she wouldn't have been able to handle. Enlisting meant she had no choice but to fall into line, follow orders, train, and train hard. It gave her a distraction from her grief, and it was during her training that she met Alec Campbell, who went on to train as a military psychiatrist and they ultimately ended up deployed to the same medical unit in Afghanistan. They formed a close friendship and bonded over the fact they lost both their parents at a young age. Where Ava was able to live with family when she lost her dad, Alec went on to be fostered and ultimately adopted by the Campbell family in Sydney and that was how Ava met her first serious love, Mark Campbell, one of Alec's charismatic and flirty brothers. Although she fell head over heels, distance made it difficult and even more so when Mark decided to study law at an Ivy League college in New York. When she got the news of her first deployment, they made the choice to call it quits but promised to keep in touch and stay friends. It just never really eventuated. Mark was pretty shocking at keeping in touch and she heard via Alec that he was living a busy life in New York, which she knew meant having lots of sex and partying. It was what Mark did best back then. It was on her first deployment that Ava met the man who would become her husband, Michael (but he always preferred Mick). They got close on their downtime. Very close, and it wasn't long before they slept together and romanced blossomed. When they returned home to Australia, they were both posted to the same Air Force Base and bought a flat together a short drive away. Mick qualified as a pilot and Ava soon finished her training to become a fully qualified special operations combat medic. Life was easy for a little while until they got news that they - along with Alec - were being deployed to Afghanistan, along with Mick's old childhood friend, Taylor (father to Cooper Saunders). Knowing the risks they were facing and were being put on the front-line, Mick proposed to Ava and they got married in a quickie ceremony with Taylor and Alec as witnesses. Despite being on the frontline, things were relatively smooth running for them initially. It was hard, and Ava found herself facing things she had tried to prepare herself for, but didn't really develop the skills to deal with until it was there in front of her and she had no choice but to cope. Because of that, and with a determination to make her deceased parents proud, she ended up becoming a highly skilled medic and was stationed in some of the more difficult infirmaries over there. She never expected that in one single evening, her whole life would change. News had come that the fighter plane Mick had been piloting with Taylor on board had gone down. Ava once again felt like her life was being torn away from her. It was within 48 hours that the plane was recovered, with the rescue delayed due to suspected landmines in the area and the classification of high-risk danger. That was an understatement. Mick been badly injured when the plane went down, but it was nothing compared to what had happened to Taylor. He had panicked and exited the aircraft, stumbling right out into the firing line of enemy soldiers and was executed at close range, just meters away from Mick's line of sight... and he watched his best friend gunned down in cold blood to near unrecognisable proportions. That day changed them. Mick was diagnosed with PTSD and given medical discharge from the Air Force. Ava's own mental health was called into question enough for her to be granted temporary medical leave. Things were downhill from there. Mick and Ava's marriage became increasingly stressed and their sex life ceased entirely. Mick started drinking and had an affair with a stripper. Ava discovered she was pregnant before she caught Mick heavily intoxicated having sex in the back of his car with the stripper. The stress of the nightmare caused her to miscarry the baby and even though she was devastated, she would come to view it as a blessing in disguise. They separated and before the ink was even dry on their divorce papers, Ava decided to leave the Air Force and moved back to her hometown, Melbourne, to try to pick her life back up. She took a job as a Registered Nurse in an Intensive Care Unit at one of the city's biggest hospitals and threw herself into her work. It wasn't long before Ava ended up having an unexpected romance with a wardsman at the hospital, who she soon discovered had a bad gambling habit and would get violet with her whenever he lost large amounts on the horses. It was a harrowing time when he drained all their income and she had no resources to escape the domestic violence. After the worst incident of the relationship that left her black and blue in Casualty with a broken arm and concussion, she finally got the courage to admit what was happening to her to Archer. Her little brother - who was by then studying for his Doctor of Psychology with the goal of becoming a Neuropsychologist like their mum had been - flew straight to Melbourne to help her get away. He was Ava's biggest support when she decided to take a job as an ICU Nurse Practitioner at a private hospital in Sydney and pick the pieces of her life up to start over again.
