"Just give me a reason, just a little bit's enough
Ava Catherine Marcus (nee Lawrence) is an only child and raised by her single father, Neil, when her mother passed away from cancer when she was five years old. Ava doesn't really remember her mother, but her father ensure her memory was alive with many pictures and videos of her, telling her frequently how alike her mom she was. He was both a father and a mother to, some how managing to help her grow up with all the typical female hurdles one goes through when they hit teens and beyond. Her poor dad faced it like a trooper, but when she was eighteen she caught a bad flu and her father was trying to get home from work to her so she didn't have to be alone. A storm hit, and rather than pulling over, he kept driving. His car spun out of control and he crashed into a tree, dying on impact. Ava felt like she wouldn't be able to live without him, and to this day she doesn't know how she coped. She went to live with her aunt and uncle, but they were so different to her dad that it made her grief for him even worse. It was ultimately what led to her decision to enlist with the Army to train as a medic because it was that or step onto a path she wouldn't have been able to handle.
Enlisting meant she had no choice but to fall into line, follow orders, train, and train hard. It gave her a distraction from her grief, and it was during her training that she met the man who would become her husband, Benjamin (but he always preferred Ben). Ava felt like she was so alone in the world and he was there for her when it felt like no one else was. They got close on their down time. Very close, and it wasn't long before they slept together and romanced blossomed. Once trained, they got news that they were both being deployed to Afghanistan, along with Ben's old childhood friend, Brendan. Knowing the risks they were facing and were being put on the front-line, Ben proposed to Ava and they got married in a quickie ceremony with Brendan and another friend as witnesses. Ava changed her named, and they soon found themselves departing for the Middle East, with Ava now a fully qualified special operations combat medic, known as a 68W (or 68-Whiskey).
Despite being on the frontline, things were relatively smooth running for the three of them initially. It was hard, and Ava found herself facing things she had tried to prepare herself for, but didn't really develop the skills to deal with until it was there in front of her and she had no choice but to cope. Because of that, and with a determination to made her deceased parents proud, she ended up becoming a highly skilled medic and was stationed in some of the more difficult infirmaries over there. She never expected that in one single evening, her whole life would change. News had come that the fighter plane Ben had been on the day before had gone down and he, along with the pilot, Cole Carrington, and co-pilot, Ben's best friend, Brendan. Ava once again felt like her life was being torn away from her.
It was within 48 hours that the plane was recovered, and the rescue had been delayed due to suspected landmines in the area and the classification of high risk danger. That was an understatement. Both Cole and Ben had been badly injured when the plane went down, but it was nothing compared to what had happened to Brendan. He had panicked and exited the aircraft, while Cole and Ben stayed in wait. Brendan stumbled right out into the firing line of Afghani soldiers and was executive at close range, just meters away from Cole's line of sight... and he watched his lover be gunned down in cold blood to near unreconisable proportions. Only Ben knew Cole and Brendan had been secret lovers. At that point, Ava hadn't even known either of them were gay, both closeted due to strict military upbringings.
That day changed them all. Cole and Ben were both given Honourable Discharges due to medical reasons, and Ava's own mental health was called into question enough for her to be granted medical leave. Ben recovered quicker than Cole... and it's uncertain whether Cole has even recovered to this day. He hardly speaks of what happened, and has fallen into an adverse lifestyle that negates any recovery. Feeling he owed it to Brendan to take care of Cole, he and Ava moved to New York and Ben began using drugs with Cole to try to numb is own residual PTSD from losing his best friend. Things were downhill from there. He and Ava's marriage became increasingly stressed and their sex life ceased entirely. Ben started drinking, spending so much time with Cole that when Cole built his empire with his nightclub, Ben was right by his side and became a bouncer there. All it did was strain the marriage even more with him never being home at night, and Ava found it hard to keep trying to get through to him.
They had now separated, but still live in the same City. Ben lives in Manhattan and when she left him, Ava got a small apartment in New Rochelle and a job as a Registered Nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital, where she works in Oncology and Rehabilitation. She's miserable and lonely, and her only saving grace are the wonderful friends she has made at work and the support network she has built there. Without her friends, she wasn't sure how far she would go with giving up on life all over again. She misses Ben, and mourns the fact their marriage never really had a chance, but at this point in her life, she has no idea what her next turn is supposed to be, or even how to start to figure it out.
Just a second we're not broken just bent,
and we can learn to love again
I never stopped, you're still written in the scars on my heart
You're not broken just bent, and we can learn to love again"
